Gaming, Crafting and Baking - Meet the student fundraisers helping to make a difference.

Students really are some of our most amazing supporters. In the last year, groups from four UK universities have found creative ways to fundraise, ensuring education and protection for children living in some of the world’s toughest situations.

Read on to find out how University students from Cambridge, Chichester, Plymouth and Sussex have helped to raise more than £4,000 for Children on the Edge.

Cambridge University turns conversation into community action

The Global Panel Project is a lifelong learning initiative founded at Pembroke College, University of Cambridge. After hosting an online discussion on education in crisis, their team  decided to turn the conversation into visible community action by holding their own community arts fair in support of Children on the Edge.

‘Crafting a better future’ was held at the Old Library in Pembroke College, inviting the Cambridgeshire community to join them for an afternoon of creativity, community, and impact. There was a huge variety of crafts, activities and stands, and visitors not only raised over £370, but spent time creating their own ‘cards of hope’ for refugee children in Bangladesh.

Prashanti Sen (Founder & Executive Director of Global Panel Project) said: “There was a real moment during the event when everyone was getting involved and was focused on creating their cards of hope, where it felt like everyone was standing together in solidarity, with a simple act of kindness that facilitated a connection between all of us.”

Gaming for Good - Plymouth University's SwitchUp Society Raises £3,000 on Twitch

Plymouth University’s SwitchUp society has been ‘gaming for good’, raising more than £3,000 through annual live-streaming Nintendo gaming marathons.

After organising a successful gaming fundraiser in 2025, the SwitchUp society decided to support Children on the Edge again by holding a mammoth 48-hour charity live stream over Twitch. They spread the word at the society fair, inviting friends and other university societies to join in. Society members hosted 3-hour gaming shifts and completed forfeits as they reached various fundraising milestones.

Over two whole days, they live-streamed - playing Overcooked 2, Animal Crossing and Mario Kart - and completing forfeits like wearing silly hats, live karaoke sessions and, for the unluckier members, getting pelted with cream pies. The 48-hour gaming marathon raised over £1,500!

“It was a great event, there was a really fun atmosphere throughout the two days, and we’d do it again! It was really fulfilling to do something that we enjoy [gaming] and be able to support Children on the Edge at the same time.”

Kicking off a year of fundraising with Sussex Geographers

We were delighted to be chosen as Charity of the Year by the University of Sussex’s Geography Society.

They kicked off their fundraising with a lunchtime cake sale, raising £142 and have lots more exciting plans to help them reach their fundraising goal over the coming year.

Social secretary Lily Eitel said, “We chose Children on the Edge as the Geography Society’s Charity of the Year because they are a local charity that embodies compassion and dedication. We would love to raise £500 this year to help make a tangible difference in the lives of these children who deserve every opportunity to succeed.”

Chichester University Students bake to support Play-Based Learning in Uganda

At the University of Chichester, second-year Education Studies students organised two cake sales, raising over £500. Our Early Years Consultant and University of Chichester lecturer, Debra Laxton, said, “A huge well done to Emma, Ruby and Lana and all of the Education Studies students who organised the cake sales and made sure that no one passing left empty-handed! They’ve raised an incredible amount to support Children on the Edge in empowering marginalised children and communities through global community-led education, protection, and play.”
