Educating Children

We support local communities to provide education for children who are forced to flee their homes, surviving in conflict areas, facing extreme discrimination, or living in poverty.

"
We strive to support the children and meet their needs so that they can grow, develop and thrive.

Every child has the right to an education, but children who are living in refugee camps, marginalised communities or active warzones, often have no way to access learning.

We work to ensure that children have access to high quality education, in bright, colourful spaces, with lessons taught in their own language, by trained and trusted teachers.

Every education programme we support is bespoke, and always led and genuinely owned by the communities we partner with. We work together to create innovative, award-winning solutions that provide quality learning that enables children to thrive.

We train local teachers, so children have familiar adults around them, who speak their own language and can keep them safe. Our classrooms are fully inclusive; with curriculums designed for each situation we work in, and parents encouraged and resourced to support their children

We make sure children are inspired to be creative and able to express themselves. Head into any Children on the Edge learning centre and you’ll see a riot of colour, with artwork and decorations filling the whole space.

All children need education to be able to thrive.

In Uganda

Congolese refugee children access fun, play based lessons that are set up outside, close to their homes. Local community members are trained to teach and supported by a network of peers to help them deliver quality, play-based early years education that will set children up for lifelong learning.

In Bangladesh

Rohingya refugee children have no option but to study the Myanmar curriculum, in a language they don’t understand. Local digital teams develop video lessons, dubbed in Rohingya so that children can actually learn and teachers can understand what is being taught.

In the marginalised communities of Cox’s Bazar, working children are able to attend flexibly timed classes, in schools with bright, colourful gardens and plenty of space to play.

In India

Dalit children in India face crippling discrimination in government schools, so the learning centres we support in the most marginalised slum communities provide supplementary classes and teach them about their rights. Enriching activities and celebrations boost their confidence and help them recognise their inherent worth.

Meet Kismot Ara

In August 2017, Kismot Ara and her family fled genocide in Myanmar. Now in the world's largest refugee camp, she comes to our learning centre with her friends.

She says, “I am so excited about my textbooks being turned into video lessons! Every day I can’t wait to watch them and they really help me to learn. I can understand what is taught really quickly so it makes me concentrate better in class. I have enjoyed them so much that I have even inspired some of my friends to come to school with me!”

A donation today can help Rohingya refugee children like Kismot Ara to access fun and meaningful education.
