Innovation

Together with our local partners, we use over 30 years of experience to find bespoke solutions to difficult problems, approaching each situation with humility and respect.

"
Spreading innovations such as Children on the Edge’s community-led refugee education model across borders can be a gamechanger for education, worldwide
"

Saku Tuominen, CEO of HundrED

From each partnership and situation, we learn more and are able to share more.  We often scale up innovations and replicate models to new areas, to increase the impact for those who need it most.

By pioneering the use of ‘Hanifi’ - a written script of the Rohingya language - our learning centres in the world’s largest refugee camp are teaching the children to read and write in their mother  tongue for the very first time.

Our award winning Cluster Learning Model is expanding rapidly reaching thousands of Congolese refugee children in Kyaka II refugee camp Uganda, providing high quality, community led, early years education.

After 10 years of supporting Child Protection Teams (CPTs) in the slum communities of Jinja, Uganda, we replicated the model, eight hours north in the Karamoja district. Here, poverty is rife and children are severely at risk, but we know this community led approach has the potential to keep children safe, and help them grow.

Our innovative award winning Digital Education Programme in Bangladesh enables Rohingya refugee children to access meaningful learning. Due to the strength of its impact, the model was implemented on Bhasan Char Island in the Bay of Bengal, and Patna, India.

Our programmes often receive international recognition and awards for innovation.

Our unprecedented initiative in Bangladesh is supporting thousands of Rohingya refugee children to read and write in their own language.

Meet Romaina

In August 2017, Romaina and her family fled genocide in Myanmar. Now in the world's largest refugee camp, Romaina learns with friends at our centre and is one of the first ever Rohingya children to learn in her own language, using the new ‘Hanifi’ script.

She feels proud and excited, saying, "Hanifi is much easier to read, write, speak, memorise, and understand! I want to be well-educated and skilled because 95-100% of our Rohingya population are uneducated. I want to use this new skill to change my community in the future."

Our amazing regular donors give us the reliable income we need to continue to find innovative solutions to educate and protect marginalised children around the world.
