Charity Starts at Home

Double your impact. Back Karamoja's homegrown solutions.

Karamoja is Uganda’s poorest and most isolated region, where over 74% of families live in extreme poverty.

Though local communities are fiercely fighting back to protect their children, the odds keep stacking up against them.

Severe droughts have wiped out their carefully grown crops, harmful practices have become a survival strategy, and a lack of safety and education services pushes children into exploitation.

Clean water starts at home

Environmental crises always hit the poorest areas the hardest. 85% of people in Karamoja depend on agriculture, but more than 70% of households lack access to the recommended daily water amount. This year’s drought has destroyed over 90% of the once-blooming vegetable gardens we support, which local people had grown so carefully to provide for their children. This has reversed many of the gains they made in their plight to strengthen household resilience. They are miles from water sources, but they aren’t giving up.

While drought has devastated their crops, resilient families are replanting, and your doubled donation will drill community-managed boreholes - securing a close, permanent water supply to keep crops thriving, children fed, and school costs covered.

Education starts at home

Education in Karamoja lags significantly behind the rest of Uganda, presenting some of the starkest structural gaps in the country, and early childhood education presents an even more severe crisis. The first five years are the most vital window of a child’s development, yet remote villages lack early years services or trained teachers. With no learning opportunities nearby, 86% of youth here lack any formal education, missing out on both early learning and the vital safety net a classroom provides.

While remote Karamoja lacks the early education opportunities needed for critical child development, your doubled donation will bring vital learning straight to their doorsteps by replicating our proven ‘cluster learning’ model.

Protection starts at home

A lack of child safety services in remote Karamoja leaves children vulnerable to exploitation and harm. Many harmful practices are deeply woven into traditional survival strategies, designed to withstand one of East Africa’s harshest environments.

To protect children where official safety nets are absent, your doubled donation will back a community-led movement of cultural change, equipping local volunteers, elders, and families to collectively adapt traditional survival strategies to keep the next generation safe.

For solutions to last, they have to start at home.

£10 can fund one month of early learning for a child. With every pound doubled, that same £10 can give two children a whole month of learning and play.

What happens when drought hits...

After receiving training and starter seeds from their local Child Protection Team, Philip and his wife, Elizabeth, planted a small vegetable patch. In a short time, their garden was thriving but during the severe droughts in 2026, the water sources Philip relied on dried up. When their community borehole broke down, they had no more options.

Despite these setbacks, Philip and Elizabeth are not giving up, they are recycling seeds and preparing to plant again. Watch their story to see how the drought has affected their family, and what they need to start growing again.
