Beyond Lessons: Supporting Children To Thrive in Bangladesh

Within our 17 Community Schools in and around marginalised communities in Cox’s Bazar Bangladesh, children are thriving.

They enjoy being able to play and have fun, and are encouraged to express themselves through their very own online news platform -  ‘Moja Kids’ and the school Child Councils.

‘Moja Kids’ videos delight the children, who excitedly watch the video newsletters, created by their peers, on the projector screen in their classrooms.

Child Councils have been playing a crucial role in inspiring and generating ideas for new ‘Moja Kids’ episodes and members are able to practise their presenting skills, which can boost confidence and offer a chance to giggle!

Child Councils also support teachers by reducing absenteeism and maintaining school discipline. Recently, they tackled a dengue outbreak by promoting mosquito net use and implementing water safety measures.

Programme Manager Sudeb Rudra proudly states:

“The leadership quality of the Child Council members is increasing. They make a positive impact in the local community by gathering knowledge from school regarding health and hygiene practices and sharing it with family and neighbours.”

Outside the classroom, Thursdays are a favourite among the children as they are designated as ‘play day.’ On these days, they play games, take part in creative activities, and tend to the beautiful gardens around their classrooms.

Recently, they planted tree saplings whilst learning about the environmental benefits of trees.

At the start of the school year, the children were asked to draw positive aspects of their school on one side of a paper and problems on the other.

To the delight of Project Officer Rashel, they only drew on the positive side. When asked why the other side of the papers were empty, one student, Jannatul Naima responded:

“Everything in our school is very good. The teachers love us very much. We cannot understand what we could draw here. There is nothing bad in our school and we do not have any problems, so we did not draw anything here.”

Another student, Sifat Sultana explained her drawing:

“We can evaluate ourselves through exams, so we drew an exam paper. Our school has a beautiful garden with various flowers, which greatly enhance the school's beauty. We drew the garden and the big playground where we can play sports. We also drew educational materials like books, notebooks, pens, pencils, erasers, and scissors, all provided free by our school.”

The positive feedback from the children highlights the significant impact of these programmes on their lives. With continued support and dedication, Moja Kids and Child Councils are not only transforming participatory education but also fostering a generation of confident, knowledgeable, and community-minded individuals.
