We work with displaced families in Kachin and Kayah State, providing emergency support as they face repeated military attacks and are cut off from essential services and supplies.
Ethnic groups in Myanmar have been persecuted by the military junta for decades, some for generations. Ongoing conflict has displaced more than 3 million people within the country.
As this largely unreported war continues, it is the children that are bearing the brunt.
Displaced families in Kachin State live in remote, mountain camps in an attempt to escape active conflict, but still find themselves subject to artillery and aerial attacks. Communities dig bunkers around the preschools we support here, and provide for their children as best they can, but are cut off from income opportunities and basic supplies, with the high altitude meaning they are often surviving in sub zero temperatures.
Karenni (Kayah) State has seen some of the most intense fighting in Myanmar. Over 40% of Kayah’s population is displaced, mostly sheltering in remote camps where the thick jungle provides a measure of safety.
Children on the Edge works with local partners to provide essential warm clothes, food parcels, safe spaces, and extra preschool nutrition for displaced communities in these areas.
Our small size and the generosity of our regular supporters means we are able to respond quickly in volatile emergency situations.
