Education for working children in Bangladesh

Education for 1,300 working children living in Cox’s Bazar where poverty prevents them accessing school.

Within marginalized communities in Cox's Bazar, Bangladesh, extreme poverty forces thousands of children to work to support their families. As a result, many face financial and practical barriers to going to school, and risk growing up without an education.

Partnering with Mukti Cox’s Bazar, Children on the Edge provides free education for 1,300 children here in welcoming Community Schools. Teachers offer high quality, engaging lessons and flexibly timed classes allow children to fit their studies around their need to work.

The schools are surrounded by gardens full of flowers and play equipment and there is plenty of time for creativity and fun.

Teachers are trained from within the community, so children are taught by trusted, familiar adults who understand their situation. Children are supported to reach Grade 5, so they can take their national exams and progress in mainstream education.

Our award-winning digital lessons bring learning to life in the classrooms and by far the most popular activity is their online news platform ‘Moja Kids’. This enables children to record video newsletters and share them back and forth with Rohingya children in Kutupalong refugee camp and as far as Uganda, India and Cambodia.

Children participate in Child Councils where they give their opinions and suggestions about how the programme is being run, talk about issues that are affecting them, learn about their rights and communicate them to their friends and families.

The schools are enthusiastically supported by local communities and government officials. In exams, students often outperform mainstream schools, reflecting the quality of what is being taught and the benefits of digital lessons.

Meet Sharmin

“Myself and my brother only receive an education because of this school. In addition to my studies I love to draw in class and I have also taught my mother how to sign her name. I really enjoy being here as I have lots of friends and feel liked. The school is more comfortable than my home and when it is closed I don’t like it!

At home we have goats that I graze and give water to after school. My mother is a housewife but my hope is that I can use my learning to get a job in the future and improve my life.“
