Over the Easter holidays, whilst many of us were enjoying the bank holiday sunshine; nine year old Florence Day, from Chichester was on the final push to the finish line of her epic 125 mile cycle ride to Paris.
Florence and her dad Chris kicked off their mammoth challenge from Dieppe on Monday 10th April, cycling 125 miles through the french countryside, reaching the Eiffel Tower on Friday 15th April. Lydia is the Chairperson of Masese I Child Protection Team in Uganda. She is also a ‘Lead Storyteller’ for her community. 20,000 miles covered and over £6,500 raised in just 30 days for our latest virtual challenge.2/5/2022 Back in March we launched a new virtual challenge for spring: ‘Walk 100 miles in April’. Like our previous virtual challenges, we wanted this to be flexible so that anyone could take part, no matter their location, level of fitness or age and we were delighted when over 200 people signed up.
Children took part with their families, groups of friends walked together and lots of four-legged friends joined in with their owners. The challenge even went overseas, with people chalking up miles in Gran Canaria, Seville and Florida! Two major running events both took place on Sunday 3rd April and Children on the Edge was lucky to have supporters taking part in both races.
In London over 10,000 runners took part in the 2022 London Landmarks Half Marathon, including our team of runners - Gilbey, Alice, Kunal, Nina and Daan - who took on the closed roads through Westminster and the City. Fundraising Officer Annie Whillians went along to cheer on the team and told us; “It was our first year at the London Landmarks Half Marathon and we were blown away by the event. It was incredibly popular and seems to be an event you don’t want to miss if you want to take on a challenge for charity! We can’t thank our London Landmarks team enough, they were dedicated to their fundraising from day one and each of them smashed their targets collectively raising over £2,500. They were a lovely bunch and I was so pleased to meet them all on the day - there were smiles all round! Children on the Edge will certainly be involved with this event in the future, so watch this space!” On 24th February 2022 a special graduation ceremony was held for 38 teachers who had completed their training and received certificates in Kyaka II refugee settlement, Uganda
The ceremony was presided over by the District Education Officer who said, “This is the first time in the entire district to have an Early Childhood Development caregiver’s graduation and indeed Children on the Edge Africa is a game changer. The issue of using untrained teachers should be something of the past.” As the crisis in Ukraine unfolded, long term Children on the Edge supporter and talented chef Juliet Graham knew that she wanted to do something to help support Ukrainian refugees.
Having previously hosted some wonderful fundraising dining events to support Children on the Edge, including the DIY home cooking evening ‘Dine in for Lebanon’ during the pandemic, Juliet decided to hold a Ukrainian Feast in Chichester. Voluntary Child Protection Teams in Wandago, Masese I, II and III, Loco and Mafubira help to make their communities safer for children. In recent months they’ve been busy and made some amazing progress. Here are some highlights….
As the war in Ukraine continues to shock the world, and more and more Ukrainians are fleeing the country for safety, what is happening on the ground in Romania and Moldova as thousands of refugees arrive? What are Children on the Edge doing to help?
Spring is here, the days are getting longer and the sun has finally made an appearance. We have loved seeing all of the amazing ways our supporters have chosen to fundraise for us, from cycle rides to yoga classes, and there were even pets who got involved too.
