In 2019 Body Shop at Home Consultant Claire Martin decided that she wanted to push herself out of her comfort zone, so booked a charity trekking challenge to Jordan for the following year. The trek involved lots of walking, camping (which is not something she is passionate about) and would also be the first time that she had travelled alone. When the pandemic hit, the trek was cancelled and rearranged,then cancelled a second time so Clare decided to switch to another adventure, this time in Sri Lanka but due to the political unrest in the country her trip was cancelled yet again. In spite of all this, Claire was determined to complete her challenge, so with just one month’s notice she set her sights on Cuba.
On Monday 5th December 2022, we held a virtual event online with staff members from Children on the Edge and our local partners in Bangladesh - Mukti Cox's Bazar. Our panel spoke about the impact of the digital education programme in Bangladesh and how it is helping thousands of Rohingya refugee children access meaningful education. The charity was co-founded in 1990 by Bishop Luffa graduate and Chichester resident, Rachel Bentley and the late Dame Anita Roddick. After witnessing the appalling conditions in Romanian orphanages first hand, Dame Anita Roddick mobilised her company, The Body Shop International, based in Littlehampton, to help. The Body Shop, sent supplies and a small group of volunteers, to help three orphanages in the remote village of Halaucesti. Rachel Bentley, a 23-year-old law graduate from Chichester, was one of these volunteers, and together, they sparked the response that created Children on the Edge, which exists to this day to support some of the most marginalised children around the world. Across all our programmes, we ensure that children are included and given space to participate, so that they can realise their rights and thrive.
