Playschemes Build Relationships
Another successful playscheme was completed at our Timor-Leste programme. Seven volunteers from across The Body Shop Asia, Australia and Singapore markets took part.
Past playscheme volunteers have hailed the scheme as an opportunity of a lifetime to make a difference to a community that is struggling to rebuild itself post conflict. But more important are the relationships that are forged on many levels between everyone involved.
Playschemes are about making connections the minute you step off the plane. Brave volunteers meet as strangers in a foreign country. What connects them is that they have all chosen to embarked on a humbling journey to try to make a positive change in a far away place called Viqueque.
Volunteers build an affinity with a conflict torn country that still struggles to rebuild itself but is rich in the power of its people, their strength and resilience.
They build a kinship with the children and their families who warmly and openly welcome them into their homes and their hearts. Often all it takes is a simple greeting, a cheerful smile and a simple desire to be their friend.
Playschemes are about an exchange of bright ideas, undying passion, and lasting selflessness amongst everyone.
They are about developing a rapport through play, arts and crafts and sports which speaks its own language and has the unique power of bringing together people from different nationalities and upbringings.
A common understanding of love, admiration and wholehearted goodness is felt by all who complete this journey.
Underlying these connections is a bond that is formed over ten days by a single meeting of volunteers, children, and the local community who build a relationship that will last a lifetime through playful moments, meaningful experiences, bright eyed children and the desire to make a difference. How many relationships can boast such permanence?
