Burmese Military Threaten School Project

On Monday 6th October, soldiers from both the Democratic Karen Buddhist Army (DKBA) and the State Peace and Development Council (SPDC) attacked the edge of Kaw Hser village. The village is situated in Karen state, Burma, on the Thai-Burma border, and is near to the Umpium Mai Refugee Camp. The soldiers placed landmines around the village and forced villagers to flee.

Kaw Hser is the location of the Children on the Edge Nursery School Project.
Currently, the nursery school is still running but not everyday. Each day a decision is made as to whether the activities should run, depending on the safety of the area. Many of the villagers have fled the area but some have decided to stay. The men who are still living in the village are taken daily to work for the Burmese military to build a new army base. Those who have fled the village tried to cross the border into Thailand but were sent back to Burma. They are now living in the jungle with no food or shelter.

Children on the Edge, together with their partner organisation the Burmese Migrant Workers Education Committee (BMWEC), are coordinating a relief effort to get supplies to those affected by this attack. Families living in the jungle are in desperate need of food, plastic sheets for shelter, medicine and clothing. Children on the Edge has sent emergency funding to buy these essential supplies and the delivery of these supplies will be coordinated by BMWEC.
