Increased Food Prices Affecting World's Most Vulnerable Children
As the price of food increases globally, it is perhaps the world's most vulnerable children who are worst affected. For Children on the Edge this is most evident at the migrant boarding house we support on the Thai/Burma border. The school is situated just inside the Thai border, across the river from Burma. It houses orphaned and migrant children seeking shelter and education. The boarding house also provides much needed protection from trafficking and child labour, which are prevalent in this area.
The price of rice in Thailand has more than tripled in the last year and the boarding house budgets are already stretched. Schools situated just over the border in Burma have been unable to keep running due to lack of support and funds. This has resulted in more children arriving at the migrant boarding house and food budgets have had to be stretched even further.
Sadly, the boarding house staff will now only be able to accept children from unsafe areas within Burma and children without parents. This is necessary to ensure that all children living at the boarding house are given a reasonable standard of care.
To help alleviate this problem Children on the Edge are hoping to buy a small plot of land next to the migrant boarding house. This would allow the boarding house to grow some of its own vegetables and would save money from the food budget. It would also be a fantastic project for the children. Children on the Edge is also where possible investing in schools across the border in Burma.
