Thai Troops send Refugees back to Burma
58 Karen refugees have been sent back to Burma by the Thai army. They were staying at Mae Ra Ma Luang refugee camp on the Thai/Burma border. The refugees were mostly women and children. They had fled fighting between Burmese military troops and rebel soldiers from the Karen National Union in the northern region of Burma’s Karen State. The group had been staying at Mae Ra Ma Luang refugee camp since March.
According to sources, Thai troops arrived to remove the refugees at 7AM on Thursday 17 July. They took the refugees to a dock where three boats waited for them. It is not known where the refugees were taken.
The Karen Women’s Organisation (KWO), a Children on the Edge project partner, is seriously concerned for the welfare and safety of these refugees.
“It is particularly cruel to send women and children back to Burma during rainy season”, said a KWO representative.
