New Commitment in Moldova

Children on the Edge has made a new commitment to the community of Iargara in Moldova. In this community there are 924 children (0-18 years). Many of these children are extremely vulnerable for a variety of reasons. Many have parents temporarily abroad trying to earn a living, others are from single parent families or very large families who are struggling to make ends meet. In this small but very poor community there are 145 families in a precarious material situation. They don't have enough money for food and bills.

Particularly vulnerable are those children who have both parents working abroad. On our recent visit to Iargara on visiting the high school we met 42 such children. These children were living with elderly grandparents or relatives and some were living in child headed households. Andrei in this photo is 10 years old and is being looked after by his 17 year old sister. Such children often hang around on the streets and are particularly at risk from all sorts of abuse including the possibility of being trafficked, sadly this trade is rife in Moldova.

These children lack parental care and need a place to go where they can feel safe, get help with their homework, play, attend different activities and have a meal if necessary. Children who have dropped out of school need the necessary support to help them return. These children and their families would also benefit from specialist support from social workers and psychologists. All of this will be possible thanks to a new partnership with the charity "Speranta" in Moldova and with funds from The Body Shop international EMEA region raised through bag for life sales which will enable a Centre to be established for these children, a child friendly space.

With the same funds Children on the Edge also supports a similar Centre in Bacioi Moldova through its partner Keystone Human Services Moldova.
