Tackling Trafficking in Moldova

All over the world people are being tricked, forced or lured by ruthless people into a life of abuse and exploitation. This is trafficking and it's happening on a huge scale right here in Europe.
Trafficking flourishes in countries where poverty is endemic; where there are none of the social services we take for granted to turn to and ask for help. Moldova is the poorest country in Europe bordering Romania and the Ukraine. It has been identified as being one of the top three countries in Europe targeted by traffickers determined to exploit vulnerable and desperate people, especially those under 25.

Children in these areas come from very poor families. They often grow up without the care of one or both of their parents. Parents desperate for work go abroad, often illegally, to search for any kind of job to earn some money. Care of the children is left in the hands of elderly relatives, older siblings or institutions. Few attend school.

Children on the Edge is proud to have recently helped fund a new centre run by the IOM (International Organisation for Migration) for the rehabilitation of victims of trafficking in Moldova. This programme addresses the protection needs of children and parents who have been trafficked together or children at immediate risk of trafficking.

However, it has been identified that thwarting the traffickers at the very start of their operation is the best way to help end this dehumanising business. Helping communities become self-sufficient in caring for their own people is seen by Children on the Edge as the most positive way of ensuring protection for the most vulnerable.

Children on the Edge has already offered support to a rural community centre in Moldova. It is run by a local community group and is backed by the local mayor. It offers one hot meal a day, educational and play activities for children and specialist counselling services for children and families.

The need for similar community centres throughout Moldova is huge and for this reason Children on the Edge is aiming to raise funds to develop this programme in order to offer much needed protection and support.

"I am happy because at this Centre my children are protected from negative influences. There is less risk of them begging, stealing or being trafficked. Here they receive a hot meal, loving support from kind staff and they are able to play and take part in educational activities. Also I am helped by the staff with emotional and counselling advice."
